3D Product Configurator Development

For manufacturers, retailers and brands whose customers cannot judge a finish, color or layout from a flat photo.

The problem

Does this sound familiar?

Customers cannot tell from a photo how a finish, color or layout will look, so they ask for samples, hesitate, or order the wrong thing. Your sales team spends hours producing mockups by hand. 3D product configurator development lets people see their exact combination on screen in real time and send you a specification you can actually make.

What is included

3D product visualization for ecommerce: what we build

  1. 01

    Real-time 3D or 2D viewer

A fast viewer in the browser that rotates, zooms and updates as options change, with a sensible fallback for devices that cannot run it.

  2. 02

    Option rules engine

Rules define which combinations are valid, so customers cannot configure something you cannot build.

  3. 03

    Material, texture and finish preview

Tiles, fabrics, woods, metals and paints show lighting and finish properly, which is what makes a decision possible.

  4. 04

    Price and quote calculation

Prices update as options change, using your rules, and the final configuration can be saved or sent as a quote request.

  5. 05

    Catalog and option administration

An admin area lets your team add products, textures and options without a developer, so the configurator keeps up with your range.

  6. 06

    Shop and CRM hand-off

The chosen configuration is passed into your cart, quote form or CRM as structured data, ready for production.

Project types

WebGL development services for configurators and visualizers

3D product configurator development suits any product where the combination of options changes the buying decision. Typical projects include the following.

Tile, flooring and surface visualizers

Customers apply products to a room scene, switch between glossy and matt finishes and see grout and layout before buying.

Furniture and modular products

Size, material and component choices with a live preview and a valid bill of materials.

Made-to-order manufacturing

A configurator that captures exact specifications, so fewer orders need a follow-up call to clarify.

Kitchens, bathrooms and interiors

Layout and finish planning that customers can explore at home and bring to a showroom or a sales call.

Industrial and B2B product selectors

Technical products configured step by step, with rules that prevent incompatible choices.

Our process

How a 3d product configurator engagement runs

  1. 01

    Understand

We review your products, options, rules and how customers buy today, and collect sample assets. Typical time: 1 week.

  2. 02

    Plan

We define the option model, the pricing rules and the asset pipeline, and agree a first release. Typical time: 1 week.

  3. 03

    Design

Interface and interaction design, including mobile controls, plus a visual test with one real product. Typical time: 2 to 3 weeks.

  4. 04

    Build

The viewer, rules engine, admin area and integrations are built in stages, with a working preview early. Typical time: 4 to 10 weeks.

  5. 05

    Validate

Performance testing on mid-range phones and older laptops, browser checks and a rules review. Typical time: 1 to 2 weeks.

  6. 06

    Launch & Improve

Launch, usage analytics, and additions to the catalog and options as your range grows. Typical time: 1 week, then ongoing.

Technology

What we use for 3d product configurator

As a Three.js development company, we choose tools for rendering quality, speed on mid-range phones and long-term maintainability.

Three.js and React Three Fiber
The most widely used browser 3D library, with a large community, and it fits cleanly into React applications.
WebGL and GLSL shaders
Direct control over materials and lighting, which is what makes finishes look realistic and run fast.
Canvas for 2D scenes
Photo-based room scenes can be lighter and more realistic than full 3D, and run on more devices.
Next.js, Node.js and a database
A web front end, an API and an admin area for managing the catalog, options and saved configurations.
Timeline and engagement

Typical timelines and ways to work together

Timelines depend heavily on how many products and options you have and on the state of your 3D assets. These are typical ranges, confirmed in your written estimate.

  • Configurator for a single product

    Roughly 6 to 10 weeks

  • Multi-product visualizer with admin area

    Roughly 3 to 5 months

  • Large catalog or many integrations

Scoped in phases, with the first product range live early

Fixed-scope project

Well-defined builds with a clear finish line

A defined outcome, an agreed timeline and a fixed commercial envelope, with change requests handled explicitly.

  • Written scope and acceptance criteria
  • Milestone-based delivery
  • Handover package included

Dedicated team

Ongoing product work and long roadmaps

A consistent group working to your priorities, integrated with your rituals, planning and tooling.

  • Stable, named team members
  • Your backlog, your priorities
  • Monthly capacity, reviewed openly

Every project is different. Contact us with an outline of yours and we will send a project-specific estimate. Start the conversation.

Questions

3D Product Configurator FAQs

What information do you need to estimate a 3D product configurator project?

The products you want to configure, the options and rules for each, the platforms involved (website, shop, CRM), and the state of your 3D models or photos. Examples of two or three real products are the most useful. With that, we can give a project-specific estimate and say which parts are the biggest unknowns.

Will the configurator work on mobile phones?

Yes. We design touch controls from the start and test on mid-range phones, not only on fast laptops. Models and textures are optimized for size, and devices that cannot handle full 3D get a lighter view, such as a 2D preview. Many of your customers will use a phone, so this is not an afterthought.

Can it connect to Shopify or WooCommerce?

Generally, yes. Both platforms expose APIs for products, variants and carts, so a chosen configuration can be passed into a cart or a quote request. The exact approach depends on your theme, plan and checkout. We confirm it during discovery, before you commit, so there are no surprises later. If your shop needs a custom checkout step, we flag that early.

What 3D files do you need from us?

If you have 3D models, glTF or GLB files are ideal, and we can convert from common CAD and mesh formats. If not, we can work from product photos, dimensions and texture samples, or build a 2D photo-based visualizer instead. We review your assets early and tell you what needs preparing.

How long does development take?

A configurator for one product often takes a couple of months. A multi-product visualizer with an admin area takes longer. Asset quality and the number of options are the biggest factors. We build in stages and show a working preview early, so you can judge the look and feel well before the end.

Can the configurator calculate prices automatically?

Yes, if your pricing follows rules, such as a base price plus option costs, size-based pricing or tiers. We build those rules into the configurator, so the price updates as options change, and the final configuration can go to a quote request or cart. Complex custom quotes can still be reviewed by your team.

Can customers save and share their configuration?

Yes. A configuration can be saved as a link, a PDF summary or a quote request, so customers can return to it, share it with a partner or send it to your sales team. The same data can go into your CRM or production workflow, which removes the retyping that causes order mistakes.

Do you build 2D photo-based visualizers as well as 3D?

Yes. Photo-based room scenes, where products are applied to surfaces in a real photograph, are lighter and often more realistic than full 3D, and they run on more devices. We help you choose between 2D, 3D or a mix based on your products, your assets and the devices your customers use most.
